Hot off the press: form special on the ISH 2011
The special issue of form we organised as a freelance editorial project appeared bang on time for the ISH in Frankfurt. The motto on the cover – “Staging Bathrooms” – echoes the current mood in the sanitary sector, which gathered at the industry’s world-leading fair as it does every two years to analyse and discuss the latest trends.
Engineers and designers alike seem to be driven by the desire to stage water to dramatic effect: never before has water flown from the wall or tap more beautifully, colourfully, minimalistically or naturally. On top of everything else, it is being staged in ever more individual bathroom scenarios – often at the mere push of a button or a flick of the wrist, for electricity is also flowing through a growing number of today’s bathroom fittings – thanks to low-voltage technology, sensor control, computer chips and LED technology. Our article on “The Digital Bathroom” looks into how all this is affecting bathroom culture and the innovations the sector is coming up with. Our lead article examines the current Homing trend and provides a summary of the VDS trend analysis “Pop up my Bathroom”, which deals not just with new interior concepts but with the ISH themes sustainability and multigenerational viability in the bathroom as well. Many manufacturers are picking up on these trends, as our overview of new product releases shows. We spoke to leading manufacturers and designers about the big picture: whilst industry pioneer Andreas Dornbracht advocates a paradigm shift in the bathroom, brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec invoke the power of silence in design. Frank A. Reinhardt wishes you an enjoyable read as you test the waters of our ISH special.
